BEING able to spend time with your adult daughter on Saturday night is almost every father's dream.
But racing each other, side-by-side in 700-horsepower Dirt Late Model Sedans is not everyone's idea of catching up for a weekend get-together.
The unusual relationship father Steve van Zeeland shares with his daughter Kirstin van Zeeland continues on Saturday night when the pair line up for a feature clash in the Dirt Late Model "Roof Off Rumbe" at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway.
Steve and Kirstin are one half of the racing van Zeeland family which includes Kirstin's brother Aaron and team support member and mother Helen.
By day, 24-year-old Kirstin, from Redland Bay, is an administrator.
Her first career choice was hairdressing, but she eventually decided to hang up her scissors and comb when it stood in the way of her racing on Saturday's with her father and brother.
Speedway racing now offers Kirstin the best of both worlds as a competitor and as a hobby.
"It's something that's fun," Kirstin said.
"We all (family members) like to put competition on each other and see who can do better.
"But in the end it's all fun and games and as long as we can come home with a straight car, it's all good."
